Lee’s mother, Ivalita Jackson, was a nurse. Ivalita was one of the first African American nurses to serve at Booth. She pioneered the door for other African American women to follow in her footsteps.

Furthermore, Nurse Lee created a wonderful and lovely life for herself as a working mother. She served at the Salvation Army Booth Memorial Hospital (now New York Hospital Queen Center) for most of her career, from 1957 until her retirement in 1991.

Jackson Lee tried unsuccessfully for three local judgeships before becoming a municipal judicial from 1987 to 1990. Jackson Lee got appointed by then-Houston Mayor Kathy Whitmire, along with Sylvia Garcia.

Politician Lee got elected to the Houston City Council at large in 1989 and served until 1994. She helped pass a safety rule on the city council that required parents to keep their guns away from their children. She also advocated for longer summer hours at public parks and leisure to curb gang violence.

Lee is a member of three Congressional Committees.
