He was a football player who played defensive back in Division III football for the Luther college Norse but his football career came to an end in 2010 when he became paralyzed making a tackle during a kickoff in a match against Central college in Decorah, Lowa.

Back in college, he traveled from one town to another in northern Lowa giving speeches to college clubs, church groups, and local sports teams eventually he also started speaking to conferences and corporations across the country, and in the year 2015, along with his father he published a father-son memoir which was themed; ‘The Power Of Faith When Tragedy Strikes’.

After he graduated from college in 2015, he started his very own speaking company called ‘Norton Motivation’ which he operates out of Port St. Lucie, Florida.

In the year 2012, Chris alongside his family founded the SCI CAN foundation which happens to be a non-profit organization where that assists to raise funds for patients with spinal cord injuries in both Lowa and the Midwest.

The foundation also hosts annual fundraising dinners and various other functions all through the year to be able to pay for grants to rehab facilities, individuals, and hospitals, and luckily as of 2017, they have been able to raise about $600k.

Chris Norton’s Injury

While playing against Central college in Decorah, Lowa fractured his C3 and C4 vertebrae as he collided his head-on impact with the knee of a ball carrier during a kickoff return.

He was rushed to Winneshiek medical center where he was stabilized and airlifted to Mayo clinic where he went through surgery taking a piece of his hip bone and fusing it onto his C3, C4, and C5 vertebrae which were completed in roughly 3 hours.

He couldn’t speak after the surgery making him spend another 5 days in ICU after which he was sent to a rehabilitation center for physical and occupational therapy sessions which lasted for about 4 months. Barely after 2 weeks after the injury, he started having sensations in his hands and was able to operate an electric wheelchair.

After 5 weeks in the rehabilitation center, he gained feelings and movements in his upper body but still couldn’t move anything from his waist down.

In May of 2011, he moved back home from the rehab center and also returned to school.

Chris got married to Emily Summers on the 21st of April in 2018 in Jupiter, Florida with 7 adopted children. After the incident that left him paralyzed, he seems to be getting better everyday as he has a very strong faith that he will be whole again.
