While playing against Central college in Decorah, Lowa fractured his C3 and C4 vertebrae as he collided his head-on impact with the knee of a ball carrier during a kickoff return.
He was rushed to Winneshiek medical center where he was stabilized and airlifted to Mayo clinic where he went through surgery taking a piece of his hip bone and fusing it onto his C3, C4, and C5 vertebrae which were completed in roughly 3 hours.
He couldn’t speak after the surgery making him spend another 5 days in ICU after which he was sent to a rehabilitation center for physical and occupational therapy sessions which lasted for about 4 months. Barely after 2 weeks after the injury, he started having sensations in his hands and was able to operate an electric wheelchair.
After 5 weeks in the rehabilitation center, he gained feelings and movements in his upper body but still couldn’t move anything from his waist down.
In May of 2011, he moved back home from the rehab center and also returned to school.
